Unfolding
by Pedro Antunes
Unfolding 1 is the first part of a 4 elements work, each of which represent facets of a fictional character’s persona. Each of these fragments display and etch out the boundaries and divergence between the subject’s social reality and internal ideology. We are unfolding a character who, with unrealised political and personal convictions, is divided and broken up into obsessive, recursive and subsequently detached personae. Unfolding 1 will explore this fragmentation.
An everyman, where many have possibly been: living in a bare flat-share, life somewhat chaotic, he is an idealist with utopian dreams of revolution, both personal and political. These dreams haunt him and their intangible and unreachable nature allow him to ignore the reality of his own life and the small changes that could be made for improvement, he awakes without having slept.
His waking life, in contrast, is behind the glass window of a boutique, imprisoned by the weight of jewellery and the story that each piece entails and conjures: each transaction is a personal loss and another
fracture in his personal ideology. Unable to reconcile these disparate parts of his life, discord ensues.
